The Rise of EFTPOS
The Bank of New Zealand introduced EFTPOS to New Zealand in 1985 through a pilot scheme with petrol stations. From early 1994, the domestic market for EFTPOS had embarked on a steep growth curve. A ‘cultural card swing’ had occurred as the public began to switch to EFTPOS as a preferred method of payment and started putting pressure on retailers to provide it but there was no one in the market that could offer a comprehensive and specialised service.
Eftpos NZ Founded
In August 1994, Peter Marshall and Mark Thomson founded EFTPOS Rentals Limited to bring a specialised total EFTPOS hardware solution to the market. In June 1995, the trading name of the company was changed to EFTPOS (NZ) Limited. By May 1995, the company had established itself as the foremost and only total hardware solution provider offering national coverage.
Purchased by ANZ
ANZ Banking Group purchases Eftpos NZ. In 2004 ANZ Banking Group purchased National Bank of New Zealand and merged the NBNZ Merchant Business with Eftpos NZ.
In December 2012 Eftpos New Zealand was purchased by global payments company Verifone Systems, Inc. The acquisition was completed on 31 May 2013. Verifone has an installed base of more than 20 million terminals with clients and partners in more than 150 countries.
