Challenge
Barkers Max Group needed to replace their EFTPOS terminals, which were due to become non-compliant within six months. Their previous provider wasn’t forward-thinking, lacked a future-proof roadmap for their EFTPOS products, and was difficult to get support from. The group also required a modern solution that would integrate with their existing POS systems without further development, work identically across all stores, and remain simple for staff to use—especially given their shared-staff model across their retail network.
Results
Barkers Max Group partnered with Eftpos NZ to upgrade all of their 110 terminals to advanced Verifone Android EFTPOS, achieving a smooth rollout and avoiding significant setup costs. The new terminals integrated with their POS without further development, facilitated in-store marketing on screens, enabled refunds without a merchant card, and provided real-time transaction visibility through Verifone Central. Barkers Max Group also benefited from fast, reliable support and a managed rollout that saved the business tens of thousands of dollars in deployment costs.

Barkers Max Group
Barkers Max Group brings together two iconic New Zealand fashion brands with a shared commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and contemporary design. Barkers has been part of Aotearoa’s cultural fabric since 1972, known for tailoring, premium menswear, and a focus on responsible, long-lasting clothing. MAX complements this heritage with modern, versatile womenswear designed to empower women to feel confident in every part of their lives. Together, the group operates more than 60 stores nationwide, supported by a progressive approach to retail technology. Their focus on seamless customer experiences and operational efficiency drives continual investment in solutions that keep their stores connected, consistent, and ready for the future.
The Challenge
When Julian Harrison joined Barkers Max Group, he identified that their existing EFTPOS terminals were approaching the end of PCI compliance. Their current provider did not seem to be advancing their technology or offering the level of support required, which created operational pressure for stores.
They also needed an EFTPOS solution that could integrate with their existing POS without additional development work. With staff frequently shifting between locations, consistent terminal behaviour across all stores was essential for reducing friction and eliminating extra training demands.

The Solution
After reviewing their options, Barkers Max Group chose Eftpos New Zealand and the Verifone Android EFTPOS platform. Julian was drawn to the combination of advanced technology and the ability of Eftpos NZ’s field services team to manage the rollout.
Eftpos NZ coordinated the decommissioning and installation of all 110 terminals. Without this support, Barkers Max Group would have needed to engage third-party installers—an approach Julian noted would have cost hundreds of dollars per store.
“We saved literally tens of thousands of dollars… employing a third party to do that was going to cost us hundreds of dollars per store.”
The Results
Barkers Max Group now operates a modern, consistent, and fully compliant EFTPOS environment across their entire fleet of 110 EFTPOS terminals. The managed rollout delivered a frictionless transition, saving the business tens of thousands of dollars in avoided third-party installation costs. The new Verifone terminals integrate seamlessly with their existing POS, providing a familiar experience for staff across all stores and reducing the need for additional training. Refunds can now be processed directly through their POS without a merchant card, simplifying day-to-day operations and improving the checkout experience.
The Verifone M440 devices devices also support in-store marketing, enabling promotional content to be displayed on screen, and the finance team now benefits from real-time transaction visibility through Verifone Central. Hourly, daily, and instant reporting has strengthened reconciliation processes and given stores a clear first point of troubleshooting when issues arise.
Barkers Max Group continues to be supported by Eftpos NZ’s responsive helpdesk and field team, who provide rapid answers and next-day replacement equipment when required. The partnership has delivered reliability, operational efficiency, and a future-ready payment platform the group can confidently build on.
